    toniStarted in 1993 in the northern suburbs of Sydney by Julie Finch-Scally, The Duster Dollies has progressively developed the name and reputation of the organisation by introducing a streamlined and user-friendly system for cleaning a home. The system gives confidence to cleaners and consistency to customers. It has also helped The Duster Dollies win awards for their customer service – and prompted founder Julie Finch-Scally to pen a book full of useful cleaning advice for everyday living.

    From its beginnings of just one woman delivering pamphlets and doing the cleaning, The Duster Dollies has grown into an organisation with domestic cleaning agencies established in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide – and very soon The Duster Dollies will be Australia wide.

    Recent research has shown that there is a high demand for quality cleaners. Spare time has become such a rare and valuable commodity more and more people feel it’s worth paying someone to clean their home and free up their own time for quality family time or other pursuits.

    As a single mum, I wanted to earn a living and be available for my 2 boys by working only during school hours. I wanted to be involved with people, yet have my own space & time. I have the flexibility to enjoy school sports days, be a carer for WIRES, walk the Kokoda trail and be included in special occasions with family & friends. The business format was already established & the training was included. I’ve acquired new skills, set up a home office and met an amazingly diverse mixture of people as a result of my time with Duster Dollies.

    As a Franchisor, Julie does a fantastic job. She genuinely wants all Franchisees to succeed and for Duster Dollies to expand and flourish.     Since officially signing up to The Duster Dollies in 2005, I am doing things that I never thought I would. I find the work - owning, running and building a business - a good challenge. It keeps me thinking all the time and gives me a thrill when I achieve goals that I have set.

    Before owning my own Agency, I was a stay at home mum for my three children, who were all attending school and I was involved in various committees at our school, sports clubs etc. I was ready to work but I still wanted the flexibility that a stay at home mum has. I wanted to be there in the morning and in the afternoon and work too, so this business has fit really well with my expectations and my requirements.

    Today, I have a professional office within my home, which is separate in function from the rest of our home, and this works really well. I really enjoy the annual Duster Dollies conferences where we all get together and I come home motivated. My business is travelling in the right direction and I am happy to speak to any potential franchisees about my experience. I enjoy working with The Duster Dollies to cater for clients cleaning needs in my area of South Australia.     I started my relationship with The Duster Dollies as a contractor before finally taking the opportunity to buy into the franchise myself.

    Before discovering my new career path as a business owner I worked in Administration for 11 years, but found I wanted a change of direction. I began working as a housemaid in a hotel/motel and was there for almost three years, cooking breakfasts, cleaning rooms and making beds etc before discovering the Duster Dollies.

    This was the turning point in my life – even though I eventually left The Duster Dollies to pursue my own cleaning work. I remained on good terms with the agency owner and was eventually offered an opportunity that was too good to refuse!

    For me, starting out as a cleaner was very important. I didn’t dive straight into running the agency; it was a series of stepping stones and this allowed me to understand client needs very clearly. My background in an office environment has come in handy too, in the running of the business.

    Funnily enough I enjoy what I do, it gives me flexibility and time to be able to run a business as well as look after my daughter. Because I am a single Mum so time and flexibility is something that is important to me - and I get to meet new people and build a friendship with them as well as with my cleaners.

    Being a Duster Dollies franchisee has given me the opportunity to earn a decent income, have flexible hours and the bonus – to work from home. I have the opportunity to attend functions at school and drop the kids off and pick up them up – even when they have fallen off the slide and broken their arm!

    In a previous life, I was an Executive Assistant for various companies. This position normally involved long hours and intermittent weekend work. After I had children and was ready to resume work, I recognised that I could no longer return to my previous occupation and work the hours that were required with that position.

    I decided that I needed to find something that gave me an income and the flexibility I required, the bonus was to be able to work from home. That is how The Duster Dollies Cleaning Agency came into the picture. I looked through various franchising magazines and came across an article about the agency. It just happened that Julie was going to be in Melbourne the following week giving a presentation - my husband and I were impressed with the company and decided to give it go.

    Owning a Duster Dollies franchise gives you the best of both worlds. You can fulfill your duties as a parent and have a career. Plus, there is ample contact with people as you are always meeting new people whilst doing quotations and you have regular contact with the cleaners.
